“Revenge
was only one part of their plan. Justice was another.”
Ruthless is told from a
combination of third person omniscient and subjective narratives (yeah, I had
to look that up too). What this means is you have more of a bigger picture view
and the internal dialogue for the main characters. This is a story telling
technique that I haven’t seen in a while and I can’t remember any recent books
in the romance genre where this was used. Or maybe I have but they didn’t stand
out to me they way this story did. In the beginning it would take me off guard
because I couldn’t tell WHOS head I was in. But stick with it! I think you’ll
learn to love this added view of the story. I loved this book from page one.
The prologue left me teary with my heart racing. After just a few short pages I
was desperate for more. I needed to know what would happen to these characters
and whether they would actually get the revenge they’ve spent multiple decades
planning. And who would be damaged in the wake of their destruction.
“The
safest way to ensure he got what he needed from her was to secure her loyalty.
The easiest way to secure her loyalty was to become her lover.”
Ruthless mainly follows
Riley Lawless one of four Lawless siblings. After the loss of their parents the
siblings spend years trying to get back to each other and to find out what really
happened the night they lost them. Part of their plan is to get inside
information on one of the men they believe is responsible for their parents’
deaths, through his daughter. The unsuspecting Ellie Stratton gets caught in
the middle of a dangerous game. Ellie’s father wished she had been a boy; A son
that he could groom to take over his company. She has worked her whole life to
be good enough. Yet has never felt like she
was enough. For anyone. Until Riley walks in to her life and changes
everything. But losing focus now, she could love all that she’s worked so hard
for. The company is almost hers. Is she worth risking it all?
“Nothing
that’s worth anything is safe.”
This was my first book by
author Lexi Blake. Let me just say that I was not disappointed. She scattered
so many seeds of what’s to come in the Lawless Sibling novels. I am eagerly
awaiting SASTISFACTION, releasing in January. Book 2 in the Lawless series
follows the youngest Lawless brother, Brandon. All the brothers had a hard life
growing up in the system. Bran refuses to talk about all the details. But it
changed him.
“He
worried about Bran’s anger as much as he worried about Drew’s arctic chill.
Whereas Bran had gone red hot, Drew was icy cold.”
If you’re like me and
haven’t read any of Lexi’s books yet, I highly suggest you start with this one.
The story was gripping with complex characters and so many different twists and
turns. It left me desperate for more. I really hope that Lexi writes a book for
each of the siblings. There were even a handful of side characters I wouldn’t
mind learning more about. I’m going to leave you with a quote from RUTHLESS
that I can’t stop thinking about. It hit me deep in my core.
“We all want to think there’s some magical normal out there that
we could achieve if we only did this or believed in that. It’s not true. Normal
for humans means struggle. We’re all out there trying to make it through.”

She began writing at a young age, concentrating on plays and journalism. It wasn’t until she started writing romance and urban fantasy that she found the stories of her heart.
