The hospital is eerie and rubs at my skin. I’ve been away from the island for almost a year, and I still hate being away. Still hate every inch of this place—too loud and crass and fucking cold. It’s worth it, if I get her back. But I’ll hate every minute of it.

Tank is sitting in Belle’s room and his eyes flick to me as I enter, a new tension settling over him. One of my first lost boys, and best. He’s been loyal for longer than I can even remember, and he’s given it up to follow me here.

We can’t go back. And we can’t stay.

“How is she?” I ask, stepping up to the tiny girl lying frail and broken in the bed. She twitches at my voice, but doesn’t wake.

“She’s dying. Gwendy-bird needs to get her shit together.” He pauses and then, “She was here, tonight.”

I go still, staring at Belle. She hadn’t mentioned that.

“Did you tell her?” Tank asks.

I can see her, standing in the house me and the boys had shared, and she’s staring, her eyes wide and terrified. The way she looked on that godforsaken boat, so long ago. Except now she’s standing here, seven years and a thousand lifetimes older, and the pirate is by her side, and I’m losing her.
